Health Advisory: Implanted Port Devices

Some patients have received an implantable port-catheter known as the Bard® PowerPort™, which is surgically placed to provide long-term vascular access for treatments such as chemotherapy or infusions. Publicly available information and patient reports indicate that this device may be prone to fracturing or migrating from its original position due to alleged design and manufacturing issues.

When this occurs, it can lead to serious complications, including internal vascular injury and damage to surrounding tissues. The most common injuries associated with the PowerPort device include:

Fracture of catheter (with or without embolism, perforation, or laceration of blood vessel)

Infection — bloodstream infection and/or sepsis

Thromboembolic Event — pulmonary embolism, stroke, ischemia, or CTEPH

Thrombosis — catheter occlusion or deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

Port Pocket Infection — necrosis and/or infection around port reservoir

Death due to complications from the catheter
