Essure is a permanent birth control device for women. Essure consists of two sets of small metal coils that are inserted into the fallopian tubes. The coils are meant to cause inflammation, building up scar tissue that blocks the tubes and stops eggs from being carried from the ovaries to the uterus.
Since it entered the market in 2002, Essure has reportedly caused serious side effects and complications in thousands of women ranging from chronic pelvic pain to even death. Essure manufacturer Bayer announced it will stop selling Essure in the United States by the end of 2018.
