Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a type of Repetitive Stress Injury and although the most common, it is only one type of Repetitive Stress Injury.

There are three types of RSI:
1. Repetitive Stress Injuries involving tendons, muscles and soft tissues: bursitis, myositis, rotator cuff tendinitis, tendinitis including "tennis elbow" ganglion cysts, DeQuervain's disease and trigger finger.
2. Repetitive Stress Injuries involving nerves: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, ulnar nerve compression at the elbow and wrist.
3. Repetitive Stress Injuries involving the vascular (blood vessel) system: Raynaud's syndrome and thoracic outlet syndrome.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Overuse of the hands from working in a field that requires repetitive hand and/or wrist movements. The repetition leads to swelling and irritation around the median nerve, which in turn narrows the carpal tunnel. As the Carpal tunnel narrows, it applies pressure on the nerve inhibiting normal nerve conveyance.

How Will I Know I have Carpal Tunnel?

If you experience numbing (more apparent at night) throughout your hand and fingers, you may take that as a pretty good indication you suffer from Carpal Tunnel. More so if your pinky finger is numb as well. Having difficulty moving your thumb to touch your other fingers (this movement uses the thenar muscles that are supplied by the median nerve), is another strong indication that you may be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome.

To verify I do have Carpal Tunnel, Who do I go see?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is best diagnosed by an orthopedist. If further evidence is needed, the orthopedist may perform more extensive tests focusing on the median nerve.

How is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome treated?

It varies. Extreme cases may require a cortisone injection into the wrist while others may require a wrist brace and anti-inflammatory medication. Of course, reducing the usage of the wrist is always suggested, but not always possible. If these treatments don't work, you may opt for an endoscopic carpal tunnel release, a surgical procedure designed to reduce pressure on the median nerve.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most significant health problem in the workplace today. "You are legally entitled to receive compensation medically and monetarily," says the U.S. Department of Labor.

Upon receiving notification of an employee has developed "CTS", many employers will recommend seeking treatment under the company's group health insurance plan, knowing the injured employee should be referred to the Workers' Compensation insurance company. Receiving treatment under the group health plan, "CTS" sufferers forfeit their legal right to receive Workers' Compensation benefits.

"CTS" victims require the assistance of a qualified Workers' Compensation attorney to ensure that they receive the maximum Workers' Compensation benefits provided by law.
